New attraction at Country Thunder turns into a smash with festival goers

Some fans attending this year’s Country Thunder music festival were able to participate in the show’s newest attraction – a beach volleyball tournament.

The tournament gave away over $10,000 in cash and prizes, and seemed to be a big hit among the concert crowd.

The two sand courts were added to replace the Boys, Bulls and Bucks rodeo grounds from year’s past.

Country Thunder spokesperson Gerry Krochak said there was a focus on improving the festival atmosphere after over a million dollars was spent on infrastructure upgrades.

“There were some teams that were fairly serious and you can tell that they’re in it to win it. With $10,000, I could see why,” said Krochak. “It’s just one of those added attractions that our fans like.”

He added how the change was subtle and that the organizers wanted to go in a new direction from Boys, Bulls and Bucks.

“It wasn’t about getting rid of one thing and bringing in another. It was just an idea we had and we wanted to move forward with it.”

Concert goers will be crossing their fingers that Mother Nature doesn’t spoil tonight’s musical acts on the big stage like Saturday night.

Chris Stapleton is set to close out the festival with his performance beginning at 9:30 p.m. from the main stage.
