The Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association is calling on the province to join Ontario, Quebec and Alberta in sharing Cannabis Excise Taxes with municipalities.
SUMA President Gordon Barnhart says municipalities are paying for extra policing and licensing costs and should receive a share of the tax.
Barnhart believes it would be fair for the province to hand over 25% of its share since Ottawa bumped up the provincial cut from 50-75% in the 2018 budget.
He doesn’t accept the Minister of Finance’s justification for keeping the extra cash.
Barnhart says he was told they already get revenue sharing from the province.
The SUMA President says they appreciate their revenue sharing arrangement but argues municipalities should be compensated for their extra expenses to deal with the legalization of Cannabis.
