Number 1’s at 1 – Aug 16

Today is my final day hosting Number 1’s at 1 and then the rightful owner of the show, Colin Lovequist, returns home to host it on Monday! Coming up on the show today:

Merle Haggard shot to number 1 on the country chart on this day in 1969 with one of his most iconic songs, “Workin’ Man Blues.”

The world was left in shock when we learned “the King,” Elvis Presley was found dead in his bathroom. His girlfriend at the time, Ginger Alden, found him deceased and called authorities right away. Legend has it that he was reading “The Scientific Search for Jesus” at the time of his passing.

We have two birthdays to celebrate today as well. Happy 47th to Emily Robison of the Dixie Chicks and happy 80th to outlaw country great Billy Joe Shaver.

Looking ahead to the weekend, August 17, 1991, George Strait landed another number 1 with “You Know Me Better Than That.” he stayed at number 1 for three weeks with that song. Tomorrow will also mark 21 years since the Wilkinson’s landed a big number 1 in Canada with “26 Cents.” It stayed at the top for two weeks.

And we’re going to head WAY back to 1958 when Don Gibson landed his 2nd number 1 hit with “Blue Blue Day” on August 18th, 1958.

Join us for more at 1:00 this afternoon!
