Team Saskatchewan finishes strong at Western Canada Summer Games

Team Saskatchewan finished second overall in the medals at the Western Canada Summer Games in Swift Current.

Saskatchewan finished with 213 medals, including 56 gold, 80 silver and 77 bronze.

Alberta finished with 299, while Manitoba collected 171.

Top performers for Team Sask included the athletics team, which led the way with 75 medals. Men’s decathalon saw a Saskatchewan sweep, with Jake Neufeld of Saskatoon taking gold, Jordan Dasiuk of Dalmeny getting silver and Regina’s Asad Hussain getting bronze.

The men’s 800m also saw three Saskatchewan athletes fill the podium. Ron MacLean and Matthew Exner, both from Regina, took gold and silver respectively, while Brayden Mytopher of Strasbourg got bronze.

In the women’s 3m spring dive, Margo Erlam and Quin Gariepy of Saskatoon, as well as Kelsey Clairmont from Regina had a sweep of their own for Team Sask as well.

The 2019 Western Canada Summer Games will serve as the largest event ever held in Swift Current, as 1700 participants from the three prairie provinces and territories took part in the games, as well as nearly 2000 volunteers and thousands of spectators.

The next event for Team Sask is the 2020 North American Indigenous Games in Halfax, and will run from July 12 to the 19 in 2020.
