Regina hosts the 19th annual Queen City Marathon

One of the biggest events held in Regina each year goes this weekend with the 19th annual Queen City Marathon.

Events are planned all weekend starting with a nightowl 5K event at the University of Regina Friday at 8:00pm.

Race director Shawn Weimer says once again there will be many people on the streets of Regina taking part in the many races that are happening. “The total weekend it will be a little over 6,000 again this year, the third year we have broken that 6,000 mark. Sunday itself will be somewhere between 3,500 and 4,000 for the main race day itself.”

While many are running because it is something they take seriously, many others race for a reason. Weimer says seeing those people complete the race is something which is very satisfying and emotional. “It’s incredible. It’s not even their own, I mean being the race director I obviously don’t get to race this weekend, but my 3-year-old son will be running his first mini-marathon. I already get choked up just thinking about his experience on Saturday morning that he’s going to have, his opportunity to earn his very first Queen City Marathon metal.”

The 26.2 kilometer marathon will go through Regina on Sunday morning starting and ending at the Conexus Arts Centre at 8:00am.
