Alberta upsets Rams in Regina’s home opener

The University of Regina Rams were hoping to go to 2-0 to start the Canada West football season for just the third time, and the first time since 2002.  The wait continues.

Aldo Galvan was wide on a potential game-winning field goal in the dying seconds of regulation as the University of Alberta Golden Bears upset Regina 18-17 to leave both teams at 1-1 on the season.

It was a rough night for Regina quarterback Josh Donnelly who despite throwing for over 300 yards for the second straight game tossed three interceptions.  His and the Rams lone touchdown came on a pass to Kyle Moortgat in the 2nd quarter.

Rams head coach Steve Bryce says it was a night that was a tough one all around.

“We let this one slip away.” Bryce said after the game. “We didn’t do enough to win the game.  We had a real tough time getting some consistency.  It just wasn’t good enough tonight.  You expect some bumps in the road, but we were too sloppy.  We just didn’t do enough to win.”

The Rams will be back at home next week as they take on the University of Saskatchewan Huskies at Mosaic Stadium on September 13.  The Huskies improved to 1-1 after a 40-6 win at home over UBC.
