With an election taking place next month, some may be wondering who they will vote to represent them at the federal level.
Whether voters had their minds made up or wanted more information from hopeful members of parliament, the Regina Public Library decided to step up and offer the opportunity for both sides to meet face to face.
Federal election candidates met with citizens at a meet and greet event hosted at the Regina Public Library’s central branch downtown. The gathering provided citizens the chance to meet with candidates on a one-on-one basis.
Community Librarian Amy Butcher, who helped organize the event, said they are proud to be a part of this event.
“We really believe in helping people learn and grow, and this is a great chance for people to learn about the candidates so they can make informed decisions in the upcoming election,” stated Butcher.
One of the most anticipated battles is within the Regina-Lewvan constituency after MP Erin Weir announced he would not be seeking reelection.
Winter Fetyk, the Liberal candidate for Regina-Lewvan, participated in the meet and greet on Monday night. As one of the newer candidates in this year’s election, she said this is a wonderful initiative by the library.
“I want to have healthy political conversations with my neighbours. Events like this help facilitate that and I’m pleased to be a part of it.”
Besides people wanting to get to know her, she added how she’s heard questions on items such as transit, housing and climate policies among many others.
Conservative Party nominee Michael Kram for Regina-Wascana mentioned how it’s exciting to hear different perspectives from having face-to-face conversations with citizens compared to going door-to-door.
“You meet lots of people with particular issues that might not be in the mainstream, if I can put it that way,” he said. “They really want a chance to talk about their ideas.”
The federal election is scheduled for Monday, October 21.
