Riders clinch playoff spot

You can put an “X” beside their name.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders clinched a playoff spot Saturday night as they went into Toronto and spanked the Argonauts 41-16 to improve their record to 9-4 on the season.

Cody Fajardo did it with his arms and leg for the winner.  The Saskatchewan quarterback threw for 278 yards and three touchdowns while running for 80 yards and another touchdown.

“To clinch a playoff spot is great, but we have more work to do .” Fajardo said. “When you start the year, you have a one-in-nine chance of winning the Grey Cup, that improves to one-in-six when you clinch a playoff spot and a one-in-four chance when you get first place.  We want to be that one-in-four chance.  We play some tough teams down the stretch and we’re excited about it.  We control our own destiny.”

The Riders defence was also on the top of their game as they allowed only 259 yards in total offense while sacking quarterback James Franklin six times to go along with two interceptions and a fumble recovery.

The Riders will play their final five games against Western Division foes starting Saturday, October 5 at home against Winnipeg.

NOTES:

  • Charleston Hughes had two of Saskatchewan’s six sacks. He now has a league-leading 15
  • Cody Fajardo has now surpassed the 3000 yard mark passing as he sits at 3140 with 13 touchdowns—it was his first three touchdown game of the season
  • Emmanuel Arceneaux caught his first touchdown of the season when he hauled in a 55 yard pass from Fajardo in the fourth quarter
