Snowfall in southern Sask. grainbelt puts another halt to a late harvest

This week’s snowfall across much of the southern Saskatchewan grainbelt has put harvest on hold again.

Regina has a covering of snow.

The weather office says no snow in Saskatoon, 3 centimeters in Yorkton and 5 centimeters in Weyburn and Assiniboia.

SaskWheat vice chair Scott Hepworth says the ground is white with snow around Assiniboia, about 175 kilometers southwest of Regina.

He says farmers will have to wait for dry weather before getting back on the combine again.

He says last week’s delay was 5 or 6 days but this delay may be a bit shorter.

Hepworth estimates harvest at 60 to 80 percent complete in the Assiniboia area.

He says farmers need a couple weeks of dry weather to wrap up the 2019 harvest in his area.
