Girl potential and empowerment is the theme for Friday.
YWCA Regina says today is being recognized as the day of the International Day of the Girl.
CEO Melissa Coomber-Bendtsen says it’s a day to celebrate and recognize the great accomplishments of girls and women across the country. “Also highlighting and bringing to light some of the horrible situations in which girls live and continue to navigate.”
Coomber-Bendtsen says the organization will be celebrating with an online campaign. “We are going to do a social media bit on that as well about what is going on around the country and also some statistics. So we are doing a social media advocacy campaign for that day.”
She says the organization will also be using social media to help brighten what can be found in the online world. “I think that young girls and young boys are constantly bombardade with gender stereotypes and pressures on social media about what it means to be a girl and what it means to be a boy.”
Coomber-Bendtsen adds that social media can also be used to have some of those conversations, dismiss stereotypes and start change.
