HEROS hockey program comes to Regina

32 students from four north central Regina schools will be taking part in the Hockey Education Reaching Out Society over the next few weeks.

President and Founder Norm Flynn said while this program has been around for 20 years, it’s the first time for Regina to hold it.

“We’ve helped just over 10,000 boys and girls get on the ice, but more importantly, we get them to dream and we help them achieve their dream,” Flynn said. “Our motto is ‘once a HERO, always a HERO,’ and and when these kids put their jersey on, we hope to have them until they graduate high school, and we’ll help them attain their goals after high school.”

Sportchek east Assistant Manager Scott Derby said a lot of kids were happy to try on their new equipment.

“I’m going to say that most of these kids have never worn a hockey helmet in their life, so it’s a new experience for them,” Derby said. “I’ve never actually fit 32 helmets in a row, so it’s a new experience for me as well, but they’re pretty excited about it.”

Therron Sonkewaste is a grade five student at Seven Stones School. He said he’s happy to be a part of HEROS hockey.

“I’m lucky to be here right now because family members of mine decided to say ‘hey, he’s been doing good HERO sportsmanship, so we should get him into HERO hockey.”

The kids taking part in the program received free hockey equipment, and will be able to take part in practices every Wednesday.
