Many Saskatchewan farmers are not pleased about a second-term Liberal government.
The vast majority oppose the carbon tax and are upset with the Trudeau government’s response to various international trade disputes involving canola, durum, peas, lentils and pork.
Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan Todd Lewis said there are frustrations. “People are frustrated with what’s been going on. I think there has been a pretty strong message sent, but I think that we have got to work hard to ensure ag issues in western Canada are going to be fairly represented in Ottawa now.”
The President of the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities is not surprised that Ralph Goodale lost his Regina seat. Ray Orb said the veteran Liberal MP paid the price for defending the carbon tax. “Minister Goodale went on the record saying that money is going back into Saskatchewan, but that money does not go back to the people that are paying the highest rates of carbon tax, in particular the farmer.”
APAS President Todd Lewis added that he hopes the Liberals will consider a carbon tax exemption for grain drying following a difficult harvest.
