Saskatoon Police Service says the sudden death investigation that got underway Friday morning is a deceased infant.

The call came in at 8:50 a.m. from the 400 block of 5th Avenue North. It was a call described as an unknown problem. Arriving officers found the body of the baby in an alley inside a recycling bin.

Police say there is evidence this is a recent birth that occurred at another location and there is an urgent need to locate the mother of this child. They believe she gave birth recently and may be in a vulnerable physical and emotional state.

“We want the mother to come forward. We want to assist her in any way we can. That’s the priority.” said Alyson Edwards, Director of Public Affairs with SPS.

Police haven’t yet said how old the infant was or if it was a boy or girl. Edwards says investigators will look into whether the birth took place in-hospital or out-of-hospital.

Edwards adds the remain hopeful that they’ll be able to locate the mother. She says in an incident about 13 years ago, there were able to locate a mother after her baby was left abandoned and they were able to assist in providing her with supports.

Saskatoon Police are working with the Saskatchewan Coroner’s Service to determine the infant’s cause of death. An autopsy is scheduled for next Tuesday.
