Government starts search for 2020 Saskatchewanderer

The search for a new Saskatchewanderer has begun.

Zane Buchanan is in his final weeks as the 2019 Saskatchewanderer. But at the start of next year, a new person will be selected to take his place when the program celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2020.

The lucky candidate will have an opportunity to travel across Saskatchewan to take part in activities, events and visit a number of locations while promoting the province through social media.

Their connection with the public, either residents or tourists, will be created using photos, videos and other tools.

Brooke Lochbaum, who manages the Saskatchewanderer program through the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport, said she’s really excited about what’s next for the program.

“It has been a great success. We have nearly 100,000 followers on our social media pages,” she explained. “We find it’s a really effective marketing tool to market Saskatchewan as a great place to live, work and play.”

Each applicant will have to create, edit and submit an original video explaining why they should be chosen as the next Saskatchewanderer.

Lochbaum suggested applicants will need to be creative when they submit their applications to say why they would be good for the position and what kind of stories they’d be interested in telling their followers.

There will also be an opportunity for organizers and businesses to send information to the government about events or places the Saskatchewanderer should visit in the new year.

“We ask the public to let us know if someone is hosting a great event or has an attraction that hasn’t been visited,” said Lochbaum. “We’ll do a call out and the Saskatchewanderer will ask for ideas.”

The application deadline is at noon on Friday, December 20.
