Two staff members from the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency are heading to Australia for the next 38 days, but they’re not there for a holiday.
The two are joining 19 others from across the country who are with the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre team. The 21 will be assisting in fighting bushfires along Australia’s east coast and will be filling operational, planning and aviation roles.
Eastern Australia has experienced fatalities, property loss and destruction of large areas of New South Wales and Queensland due to an early and severe fire season.
While Australia has sent help to Canada four times when it comes to forest fires since an agreement was made in 2015, this will be the first time Canadian firefighters have been deployed to Australia.
