Online shopping is becoming more and more common, especially over the holidays.
That’s resulted in more packages being stolen right off of people’s door steps.
Package thefts have even been reported everywhere in Canada, including Regina.
Regina Police spokeswoman Elizabeth Popowich said it’s a crime that’s hard to prevent.
“It’s difficult to find a single solution that is going to work every time,” she said. “At one level you kind of have to admire the creativity, because really these crimes occur because there is suddenly a new opportunity with the delivery of packages to the door step,” Popowich said.
Popowich added to detour “porch pirates”, you can ask for a delivery that requires a signature before being left anywhere.
She said another option, with the consent of your employer, is to have packages delivered to your workplace.
“Now that’s something you’d have to work out with your employer and first make sure that it’s all right to receive packages at your workplace, but that is another possibility if that’s where you spend the bulk of your time during the day when those deliveries occur,” Popowich said.
Doorbell cameras and other forms of surveillance do help police create an accurate description of a suspected thief, but Popowich said they do little to locate a suspect because they do not get names or other personal information.
