It’s a first for curling in Saskatchewan.
On Wednesday afternoon, Rylan Kleiter and his Saskatoon rink consisting of third Trevor Johnson, second Josh Mattern and lead Matt Taillon captured the provincial junior men’s curling title in Saskatoon with a 7-6 win over another Saskatoon rink skipped by Daymond Bernath in what was a back-and-forth affair that wasn’t decided until the 10th end when Kleiter scored one with last rock.
The win caps off a junior career for Kleiter that saw him win four junior championships which has never happened before.
Kleiter will now represent Saskatchewan at the New Holland Nationals in Langley B.C starting January 18.
The junior women’s winner was Ashley Thevenot of Saskatoon. Her rink defeated Skyler Ackerman in an all-Saskatoon final by a score of 7-5. Like Kleiter, Thevenot will be in Langley wearing the Saskatchewan jacket at the Canadians.
