Saskatchewan Appeal Court upholds extradition of retired priest on abuse charges

A retired Catholic priest living in Saskatchewan and facing extradition on decades-old abuse charges has lost an appeal of the order.

The Archdiocese of Regina previously said that Rev. Robert MacKenzie is accused of physical and sexual abuse from when he worked at two schools in Scotland from the 1950s to the 1980s.

Evidence heard at his extradition hearing is under a publication ban.

A lawyer for MacKenzie has said his client, who maintains his innocence, was seeking a judicial review of a surrender order from Canada’s Justice Ministry that authorizes his extradition to Scotland.

The archdiocese said that while in Canada, MacKenzie served mostly in small communities around Regina.

Last year, when it revealed the allegations against MacKenzie, it reported that none had surfaced from his time serving with the archdiocese.
