Sask. livestock have special needs during bitter cold weather

Livestock face special needs with temperatures slipping below minus 30 across the province, and windchills reaching minus 45.

Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association District 5 director Levi Hull farms near Willowbrook, just west of Yorkton.

He says providing adequate shelter for the animals is crucial.

He says portable windbreaks are a good option for producers when there are no trees to block the bitter wind.

Hull says cattle also require more high quality feed with bitterly cold weather.

He says some cattle eat 30 percent more feed to stay warm.
