A quick cold snap coming to Saskatchewan over next two days

Southern Saskatchewan will be getting hit with a quick cold snap this week, as temperatures could drop into 30 below range with the windchill.

Environment Canada meteorologist Terri Lang said there is also a snow system sitting over the province, but that’s being pushed out by arctic high pressure in the northwest.

“That’s pushing down right now, and we’ll see the winds pick up with that snow, the temperatures going to start to really take a nose dive,” Lang said. “We’ll see the snow end in the overnight period (Tuesday night), and that will be replaced by that cold air.”

Lang said people will once again need to remember to protect themselves against the cold.

“Put on warmer clothes, make sure you dress in layers — it’s the air between the layers that actually keeps you warm — (keep) your head covered, face covered, hands with mitts on,” Lang said. “We know that frost bite can settle in very quickly when the windchill values are as high as they are.”

Lang said there are already extreme cold warnings in place for northern Saskatchewan.

“We’re expecting those to expand into central Saskatchewan probably over night and into Wednesday, and into southern Saskatchewan by Thursday.”

UPDATE: Those cold warnings have since been put in place for central and eastern Saskatchewan, including Yorkton, Humboldt, Prince Albert, and Moosimin.

However, Lang said the cold weather won’t last long, as Environment Canada is forecasting a high of -1°C in Regina on Friday. More details are coming up in weather.
