“When I can’t handle events, I let them handle themselves.” That is a wonderful quote from Henry Ford and it’s the perfect quote for what we’re going through right now. You do what you can do and let things play out as they will.
My grandmother always used to tell me, “This too shall pass.” She was no Henry Ford, but she had some great quotes as well.
People ask me, “Are you worried about this COVID-19 pandemic?” Worried, no. Concerned, yes.
I don’t lie awake in bed all night worrying about something that may or may not happen to me. I follow instructions set down by the health professionals. I wash my hands frequently, which I already did on a regular basis. I self monitor. I’m not going to go hang out in a bar with a bunch of people I don’t know or eat in a busy restaurant every night. Personally, I do what I can to minimize my chances of getting, and possibly, passing it on.
I feel terrible for those who work in businesses that are directly affected by this. It’s impossible not to be worried when you have no income coming in. Loan payments, credit card payments, mortgage payments, and the like will be defaulted on. There will be no way around that. The government has purchased $50 billion in mortgages to ease to the burden on banks so they can absorb some of these losses and continue to loan money out to keep the economy moving. There are a lot of pieces to this puzzle.
It’s not a matter of if we’ll get out of this, it’s simply a matter of when. If everybody does what the health professionals say we should do, that “when” will come a lot sooner.
Don’t panic, stay vigilant, and for goodness sakes, save some toilet paper for the rest of us!
