Regina man arrested following home invasion, firearm charges

A 27-year-old Regina man is in custody with numerous charges after several incidents including a home invasion.

The alleged home invasion happened on March 13 at the 1900 block of Montreal Street. Officers responded to a report of a 38-year-old man who was shot in the foot by someone who broke into the home. He was hospitalized following the incident.

Regina Police’s Street Gang Unit found the suspect was wanted on several outstanding warrants. Members of the unit were able to locate the suspect on the night of Sunday, March 29 at the 1200 block of 10th Avenue East.

While the suspect tried to escape on foot, throwing down a backpack he had been carrying, he was apprehended a short distance away. Officers found a sawed-off shotgun and a second firearm in the backpack.

27-year-old Rainey Taypotat was arrested and charged in connection with the firearms as well as the outstanding warrants. Further investigation led to charges in connection with the March 13 home invasion.

He faces the following charges:

  • Break, Enter and Commit Indictable Offence;
  • Discharge Firearm in a Reckless Manner;
  • Use of a Firearm in Commission of an Indictable Offence;
  • Two counts of Careless use of a Firearm;
  • Two counts of Possession of a Weapon for a Purpose Dangerous to Public Peace;
  • Carrying a Concealed Weapon;
  • Two counts of Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized;
  • Two counts of Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Weapon with Ammunition;
  • Possession of a Prohibited Weapon Knowing it was Obtained by Crime; and
  • Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Serial Number has been Removed.

Taypotat made his first court appearance on these charges on Monday morning.
