The city of Regina estimates it should take at least a week to repair a sinkhole that appeared on Friday at the intersection of McCarthy Boulevard and Brunskill Place.
Police had set up a blockade and closed off the west end road after a 10-foot hole opened at around 6:45 p.m. In the hole sits a very large sewer trunk main 15 feet down from the road featuring a 60-inch piece of pipe.
Pat Wilson, Regina’s director of water, waste and environment, said about two-thirds of the municipality’s wastewater flows through that pipe. However service has continued since the incident.
“The lower part of the pipe has been able to continue to convey water and there was no spilled to the environment,” shared Wilson.
“We have a bypass in place, the location has been isolated and that wastewater is being pumped around.”
Crews have since begun investigating the damage and determining the best plan to repair the issue. Due to the location’s complexity, Wilson warned that construction could be extended.
