Regina city council recommends stay-at-home order

Regina city council is recommending a stay-at-home order for the city.

Mayor Michael Fougere told citizens during Wednesday’s update that it’s not easy to do, especially when there is nice weather in the city, but he wants to frame it in a way that is educational so people are aware of the gravity of the situation.

Fougere said they are looking for a way to phrase the importance of obeying the emergency order so people will pay attention.

“We see a lot of activities happen and we saw on the weekend, when the weather was nice and warm, that people wanted to get out and kids were excited,” said the mayor. “But the overriding importance here is public safety.”

For him, Fougere believes the community needs to make sure they are self-policing and working together to reduce potential spread of the virus.

While city council has made the stay-at-home declaration, they cannot implement the order since that would be up to the government.

However Fougere mentioned they have sent a letter to the provincial government and that they are aware of Regina’s position on the matter.

“We believe it’s a very serious issue with this one,” added Fougere. “We feel compelled as a council and administration to make this statement to the public of the importance to stay home, don’t go out unless you have to, and if you do go out, be mindful of the personal separation.”

The mayor hopes an all-around effort from residents will help flatten the curve in the province.
