On April 9, citizens in Regina participated in a city-wide Day of Cheer to make noise and thank frontline workers for their hard work during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Now, Regina Mayor Michael Fougere wants to make it a weekly event for residents to honour essential workers from the comfort of their homes.
Named the Cheer for Heroes, the idea is to have people stand on their front steps, front yards, porches or balconies to cheer and make as much noise as creatively as possible.
Mayor Fougere said it’s the least the city can do to show their appreciation at this difficult time.
“They are people helping out and risking their lives to help us in Regina and around the world just to be safe while we go through COVID-19,” mentioned Fougere. “Other jurisdictions have done this and we think it’s a good idea for Regina to do its part.”
The mayor is encouraging citizens to make this “creative noise” by cheering, playing instruments or doing whatever they can for five full minutes.
Regina Mayor Michael Fougere says it’s a way to give a morale boost for those workers.
“We should remind Regina residents of the work they have done to help keep us safe once a week is not a lot to ask.”
The first Cheer for Heroes will happen at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 1. Fougere said they picked 7:00 p.m. since many shift workers, like police officers and nurses, change shifts at around that time.
