One in custody after man threatens to harm himself

A Regina man is safely in custody after threatening to harm himself Friday afternoon in the city’s north end.

At around 2:35 pm, RPS officers responded to calls of a man who had climbed on top of the safety barrier on the Argyle Street overpass and was threatening to jump.

Police discovered the man was intoxicated by drugs.

Ring Road and Argyle Street were closed off to all traffic and additional resources, like crisis negotiators, K-9, and SWAT members were on scene.

Continued attempts to negotiate the man to safety were eventually successful, but after climbing down from the fence, the man resisted police. Officers had to use a taser on the man to bring him into custody.

The man was taken to hospital for assessment and will be released from custody once he is sober.

Police say the incident is still under investigation, and anyone with information is asked to call them at 777-6500.
