Sask. producers welcome re-opening of major beef processor in Alberta

Saskatchewan cattle producers welcome the re-opening of a major beef processing plant in Alberta.

The High River plant handles over one third of Canada’s beef processing but was shut down two weeks ago because of Covid-19.

It re-opens Monday but with only one shift.

Saskatchewan Stock Growers manager Chad McPherson says the facility is important for producers in this province.

He says there are no federally inspected meat plants in Saskatchewan.

McPherson is hoping to see improved beef prices and consumer supplies with Monday’s re-opening.

The Cargill High River plant was shut-down after over 800 employees were infected with Covid-19.

Cargill has brought in new safety measures including temperature screening on a daily basis, face masks, increased sanitation and efforts to reduce crowding.
