Opening weekend a success at Deer Valley Golf Club

Due to COVID-19, the start of the golf season was later than expected, but it was a good one for the Deer Valley Golf Club.

John Greenough, Head Professional at Deer Valley, says that opening weekend went as well as anyone could expect.

“We had full tee sheets for every day of the weekend, and everyone seemed to show up despite some higher winds, so that’s pretty positive,” said Greenough. “Probably what we expected, because everyone had booked in advance and paid in advance, but probably more than we would normally get on a May Long.”

Greenough says that there was less concern about people not following the new COVID-19 guidelines, rather than making sure golfers were informed.

While no one knows how long golfers will have to follow strict health guidelines while playing, Greenough thinks that golf will look different for quite a while.

“I think you’re going to see less handshakes and high-fives, and people are going to be a little bit more cautious on how often they come into the clubhouse, just reducing how many times they have to walk into the clubhouse.”

He says that part of the reason that opening weekend was so successful is that people are looking to escape from self-isolation. Greenough adds that he hopes the momentum carries through the season.

“It was a positive weekend, and we’ll see how much lasts going through,” said Greenough. “The rest of the economy, they’re planning on opening things up in certain phases, right now, we’re kind of the only game in town as far as gold being the only sport allowed. If people are allowed to start doing different activities, I think there might be less golfers.”

Greenough says he is excited to get the season going and takes satisfaction that golfers can now enjoy the game they love and do so safely.
