FCC chief ag economist is optimistic about farm income in 2020 in Sask

Crop production challenges and lower grain prices led to a decline in Saskatchewan realized net farm income last year.

FCC chief agricultural economist J.P. Gervais says StatsCan numbers show net farm income in this province dropped $311-million or 16 percent last year.

Realized net farm income rose in most provinces except for Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Gervais says Saskatchewan faced lower grain prices and crop production challenges.

But he remains optimistic about farm income in Saskatchewan in 2020.

For 2020, Gervais sees strong production and demand of Canadian farm production.

But he says there is some uncertainty because of the covid-19 outbreak.
