Canada updates national COVID-19 projections

There are now over 93,400 COVID-19 cases in Canada, with more than 7,500 deaths and close to 51,500 recoveries.

At the daily pandemic update in Ottawa Thursday, chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam says new statistics show the number of confirmed deaths due to the virus has increased to 8% from all total cases.

“Based on available information, 16% of cases have required hospitalization, and just over 3% have required intensive care,” Dr. Tam said. “As we all know, the lab confirmed cases are an underestimate of the total number of people infected in Canada.”

New projections on the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada have been released, and it shows the spread of the virus in most of the country, is slowing.

One projection suggests no new cases by the spring of next year, something Dr. Tam says may be a bit misleading.

“What we are trying to show, I think is the modelling studies, so what modelers try to do is just input a lot of different variables and scenarios to see what might happen if you change the various public health measures.”

1.8 million Canadians have been tested, with 5% positive.
