Photo radar captures driver going 104 km/h in Dewdney east school zone

Regina Police have been dealing with a large amount of speeders and some who are stunting and street racing.

Many things are being blamed for this including the fact roads have become quieter because of people staying at home due to COVID-19.

Constable Jim Monaghan with the Regina Police Service traffic unit says that definitely has been a factor.

“It’s hard to pinpoint exactly.” Monaghan said. “The streets are slowly getting back to normal as people start going back to work, but at the start, the streets were definitely wide-open.  We have had a lot of complaints too and some of those may be from people who aren’t normally home that are now.”

While members of the traffic unit have been handing out several tickets per shift, Monaghan says there is one in particular that raised his eyebrow.

A photo radar camera that sits outside Judge Bryant School on Dewdney Avenue East captured a vehicle going 104 kilometers an hour in a 30 kilometer an hour school zone. It means the registered owner of that vehicle will soon be getting a ticket in the mail for $1,056.  Monaghan admits when he first saw this he thought the vehicle may have been stolen.

Monaghan says there are some notorious trouble spots like Wascana Park near the Legislature, Chuka Boulevard in the southeast and the area near the Global Transportation Hub which are areas that might see more visits from officers, but he says this type of behaviour can happen anywhere and tickets will be written with the chance of the vehicle being impounded as well.”

He says speed can result in a disaster whether it be an innocent bystander, another motorist or the person behind the wheel going at an excessive rate.
