Number 1’s at 1 – July 16

Webb Pierce landed a number one on this day in 1955 with “I Don’t Care.” Ricky Skaggs took that same song to number one in July of 1982.

We’ll celebrate the life of Kitty Wells on today’s show. She passed away on July 16th, 2012 from a stroke at the age of 92. She launched onto the country scene in 1952 with her number one hit “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels.”

Alabama scored their 10th number one on this day in 1983 with “The Closer You Get.”

Dolly Parton opened “Dollywood” on this day in 1986. Coincidentally, She recorded her song number one song “Love is Like a Butterfly” on this day in 1974

Ricky Van Shelton’s “Backroads” was certified gold 29 years ago today.

“Somewhere Down in Texas” from George Strait reached number one on the country albums chart on this day in 2005. It contained his 40th number one song, “She Let herself Go.”

And Jake Owen’s single “Beachin’” was officially certified platinum on this day in 2014. He’s pictured above at Country Thunder Saskatchewan 2019.
