Ty Campbell wins SK men’s amateur golf title

There was a dramatic conclusion to the 2020 Saskatchewan men’s amateur golf championship on Friday at the Legends Golf Course in Warman.

23-year-old Ty Campbell hit a 40 foot eagle putt on the 18th hole to take a one-shot lead over Danny Klughart who was in the last pairing behind him, Klughart had a chance to force a playoff, but his birdie putt on 18 rolled past the hole giving Campbell the title

Klughart seemed to have the tournament in his hands as led by five strokes after 14 holes, but a double bogey on the 15th followed by back-to-back bogeys on the 16th and 17th hole allowed Campbell to come back.

The victory is Campbell’s first stroke play event win. He has won the Lobstick matchplay tournament in Waskesiu in the past. He said becoming a provincial champion was on his wish list.

Campbell’s win earns him a spot in next year’s Canadian Amateur Championship. Nationals were cancelled this season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Thursday, 15-year-old Brooklin Fry of Shell Lake added the Saskatchewan women’s amateur title to the provincial junior title that she won earlier this month. It’s the first time someone has held both the amateur and junior title since Anna Young in 2010.
