Over 30 Saskatchewan farms hit by hail storms in the last two weeks

Farms in over three dozen Saskatchewan communities have been hit by hail storms during the past 2 weeks.

The president of the Canadian Crop Hail Association, Rick Omelchenko, says hail as large as golf balls resulted in over 1,000 crop damage claims in the latter part of July across the prairies.

“Very scattered thunderstorms, and usually they’re not too devastating when they’re scattered like that, the losses don’t add up to much,” Omelchenko said. “In this case, it seems like the centres of these little spotty storms are actually proving to have some major damage in the middle.”

Omelchenko says 2020 is another busy year for crop damage hail claims.

He says June claims in Saskatchewan are about 95% complete and early July claims are about 40% complete.
