Regina mother charged with manslaughter following 18-month-old son’s death

A 24-year-old woman from Regina has been charged with manslaughter in the city’s eighth homicide of the year.

The incident happened on June 10 when Regina police and EMS were dispatched at 10:15 a.m. to a home on the 3200 block of Arens Road. Officers and paramedics assisted with an injured 18-month-old boy who was transported to hospital by EMS, however he died later on.

The coroners service and RPS investigators opened a death investigation following the incident. It was later changed to a homicide investigation on July 15.

The investigation led to the arrest of the child’s mother, 24-year-old Chelsea Rae Whitby, who was taken into custody on August 4. She was arrested at a location approximately 50 kilometres southeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Whitby will face her charge of manslaughter at her first court appearance on Thursday morning.
