Wascana Centre’s new pollinator projects are highlighted by more than a thousand new leafcutter bees that have hatched from throughout the park.
Sarah Romuld with the Provincial Capital Commission says people do not need to worry or be scared since the bees contribute to pollination.
She says there are 12 nests that are set up in the city, so you may see one if you are visiting a park.
“As long as you’re steering clear of where their base is, and you’re not angering them or disturbing them should they be visiting a flower, you should pose no risk to them as well,” said Romuld. “Occasionally, if you’re coming here and you’re having lunch, maybe you’re having a picnic, you might see bees flying by and visiting because they like the sweetness of things like fruit.”
The bees may even be spotted at the newly placed ground cover Bee Turf, which is a lawn replacement with mixed clovers and low-growing wildflowers to increase habitat and forage for pollinators.
