Erin O’Toole has been elected the new leader of the federal Conservatives, Canada’s official opposition, replacing Andrew Scheer.
O’Toole was chosen after running a campaign where he focused on keeping the party focused on it’s “true blue fundamentals.”
The Ontario M.P won by a margin of more than 4,700 points.

The victory was secured after three rounds of ballot counting and a delay due to malfunctioning machines that were counting the ballots.

Peter MacKay was leading after the first round but didn’t get enough supporters to move over to him from the two other candidates, Leslyn Lewis and Derek Sloan.
O’Toole’s first priority task will be to guide the party through a confidence vote in September in the House of Commons.
Around 175,000 members cast a ballot.
