Rabies is a nervous-system attacking disease often found in bats, foxes, skunks, cattle, dogs and cats. It spreads to humans when an infected animal bites a human or if infected material comes into contact with an open would or scratch.

If someone were to be bitten by a rabid animal, they are to wash the wound immediately with soap and water and seek medical attention as soon as possible.

If a pet becomes infected, the SHA recommends confining them and placing them under observation if possible.

Once symptoms of rabies begin, there is no treatment for humans and cases are mostly fatal.
