Mayor Michael Fougere is hoping the federal government can help the city out in this week’s throne speech.
Fougere has written a letter to Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland asking for the federal government to locate the proposed Canada Water Agency headquarters in Regina.
Fougere says Regina is perfectly positioned in the centre of the west, with major water projects like Saskatchewan’s multibillion-dollar irrigation initiative and with other capital cities having many more federal agencies, it is critical this agency and the jobs that come with it be based in Regina.
In all, there are four areas that Fougere lets Freeland know about. He says with the local economy being impacted by cancelled energy projects and federal trade issues with China on canola and the impact COVID-19 has had on the city, something like this would be a tremendous economic booster shot.
