The family of Darcy Haugan was back in his hometown on Saturday afternoon for a very special ceremony,
Those entering the arena in Peace River, Alberta will now walk past a statue of Haugan. He was the head coach of the Humboldt Broncos and was one of 16 people killed when their team bus was struck by a semi-truck while en route to a playoff game in Nipawin on April 6, 2018.
Before coming to Humboldt, Haugan helped form a Junior B team in Peace River. He also served as the team’s head coach and general manager from 2003-2015 where they won five championships.
The statue shows Haugan with a whistle in his mouth while holding a hockey stick. There are five pucks in front of the stick which represent the five championships the Navigators won during his time with that team.
