The Saskatchewan farmer who was taken to court by agro- chemical giant Monsanto in the 1990’s over genetically modified Canola, has died.
Percy Schmeiser was 89, and had suffered from Parkinson’s disease.
Schmeiser insisted that the seeds had blown onto his field in the wind and that he owned them.
Monsanto sued him and in the end, the case went all the way to the Supreme Court, which ruled the farmer had knowingly violated Monsanto’s patent.
Recently, a movie based on his life was released.
