Collision between car and train kills driver, injures passengers in Rosthern

A 30-year-old woman has died after a train collided with a car on Sunday morning in Rosthern.

RCMP in Rosthern responded to the call of a collision at around 10:00 a.m. on November 1 in the community at the railway crossing along Highway 312.

Police learned that a vehicle carrying four occupants was travelling east on Highway 312 when it was stuck while crossing over the train tracks. The train was heading south before the accident.

The driver of the car, a 30-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. The three passengers – girls believed to be between the ages of 7 and 12 – were all in the back seat and were transported to hospital with what were serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

RCMP determined the rail crossing equipment, including the lights and the bell, appeared to be operational while officers were on the scene. Police say the rail line is privately owned.

This investigation is ongoing.
