People may have been confused after seeing scarves hanging on trees in downtown Regina parks over the last few days.
It’s the work of non-profit organization Angels 4 Warmth which features about 200 people in the community who create knitted, crocheted and stitched winter accessories for those in need during the fall and winter months.
Ruth Barlow, a spokesperson for Angels 4 Warmth, said the scarves in downtown were part of their 6th annual Scarves in the Park.
“Over the six years, we have probably completed and hung close to 1,300 scarves around the trees in the park,” she noted. “This year, we did 228.”
Barlow said each scarf takes about a week to knit for their members.
In addition to Scarves in the Park, the group responds to about 40 non-profit and charitable organizations in the city that request items of warmth for those in need.
Barlow said they always welcome donations so they can keep spreading warmth. She admitted the demand has increased this year because of the pandemic.
“Our angels are always looking for donations of yarn. We do need some cottons for quilting fabric, too,” explained Barlow. “But for the most part, it’s yarn at this point in time.”
Since the group does not have their regular drop off locations due to COVID-19 at the moment, people can donate materials by contacting Dorothy at 306-537-5989 or Sheila at 306-949-2668 to make arrangements for drop off.
“Then it’s a safe situation for everyone that is concerned and then we can still arrange the distribution of yarn so [our angels] can continue with their projects.”
