Regina nursing home dealing with significant COVID-19 outbreak

It is being called the largest outbreak at a seniors home in Saskatchewan.

Parkside Extendicare in Regina’s south end tells us in an e-mail that 50 residents have tested positive with 46 of those cases still considered as active.  Four are in hospital. Several staff members have also tested positive and are self-silating

The e-mail from Extendicare states they are doing several things to try and bring things under control including:

Increased cleaning, including engagement of additional outside cleaning companies, especially of high-touch surfaces such as handrails

•  Twice-daily monitoring of all residents for symptoms associated with COVID19, including taking their temperature twice per day and, if anyone exhibits symptoms, we will immediately have them tested and will initiate isolation procedures

•  Active screening of all staff for symptoms before they start their shifts, including taking temperatures

•  All staff providing care, anywhere in the home, will continue to adhere to full PPE requirements, which we continue to monitor closely.

There is an unconfirmed report that a resident at the home has passed away from the virus, but that has not been confirmed by Extendicare or the Saskatchewan Health Authority.
