SaskPower warns public about scam related to power rebate in Regina

As the provincial government announces a 10 percent rebate on SaskPower bills for the next year Tuesday, the Crown Corporation is already reporting one scam in connection to the rebate.

According to SaskPower, the scammer is going door-to-door asking customers in Regina to sign up for the rebate and asking for personal information.

Spokesperson Joel Cherry says the rebate is being applied automatically, meaning this is a scam.

“You have to be vigilant at all times,” Cherry said. “The scams are common and unfortunately they tend to prey on people in times when people are in economic distress or when times are hard.

“Any power you consume from now for the next year will receive this rebate automatically,” Cherry added. “Whoever’s out there going door-to-door collecting this information, they’re likely as part of a scam or for some illegal purpose.”

Cherry says one of the scammers was described as wearing a blue uniform with no logos, a name tag and a face mask. If a scammer arrives, Cherry recommends contacting SaskPower and local law enforcement.
