Mayor Sandra Masters and other members of Regina City Council spent some time Thursday morning filling Christmas Hampers for the Regina Food Bank.
While socially distanced in the Mosaic Stadium kitchen, they filled boxes with a turkey, buns, hash browns, bacon, omelets, and apple pie.
CEO of the Regina Food Bank John Bailey says he was thankful to have city council help out.
“I think it’s incredibly important for us just to know we have the support of city council, for them to come in and donate their time is really important, and really meaningful for us, and it’s great,” said Bailey. “It also speaks volumes to city council’s appetite for collaboration with our community which I think is an incredible asset for those of us working to support our city’s most vulnerable people.”
Mayor Masters says it was an easy decision to come help the Food Bank during the busy holiday season.
“It’s what we would call a no-brainer, anything we can do,” said Masters. “The call for volunteers for something like the Food Bank, it’s almost like you wished you were asked more.”
Masters says she is grateful for the support Reginans have shown through the pandemic, especially during the holidays.
“The donations the Food Bank has received, and other community organizations have received, have been heartwarming and almost awe inspiring,” said Masters. “ We continue to ask (people) to keep their eyes and ears open for that need, because it will be a little of a haul for a recovery.”
Bailey says each hamper is designed a family of 3-5 people with a traditional Christmas meal, and a holiday breakfast.
