Members of the Regina Police Service used a Conducted Energy Weapon, commonly known as a Taser, during a dangerous driving incident early Monday morning.
At about 2:12 a.m. on Monday, police were sent to the area of Park Street and Victoria Avenue for a report of a vehicle “being driven in an unsafe manner.” The caller told police the vehicle had no head lights on and was swerving between lanes.
Patrol members found the vehicle parked on the 2100 block of Rothwell Street where a driver and two passengers were inside the vehicle. Police approached the vehicle to direct the driver to exit the vehicle. The driver refused, reversed the vehicle and struck a police vehicle.
The individual continued to refuse to follow commands from police as members tried to remove him from the vehicle, which resulted in officers using a Taser to incapacitate the driver. He was assessed and cleared by EMS personnel at the scene and was taken into custody.
31-year-old Shayne Blakney Turney of Regina has been charged with operating a conveyance dangerous to the public, resisting arrest, breaching probation and breaching an undertaking.
He will make his first court appearance on these charges on Tuesday morning.
