Sask. grasshopper outbreak forecast to decrease in 2021

The latest grasshopper forecast for Saskatchewan sees reduced threat in 2021.

Provincial insect specialist James Tansey says crop loss was moderate to insects this past year.

He says there were several grasshopper outbreaks, notably around the southwest, southeast and west central and central areas.

He adds there were grasshopper hotspots in the Qu’Appelle Valley near Craven and the RM of Laurier near Radville.

Tansey says the grasshopper outbreak is expected to be reduced in 2021, but weather plays a key role in determining numbers.

He says warm dry weather is ideal while wet weather is deadly for grasshoppers.
