Evans says a big part of staying with the Riders is love for Regina

Shaq Evans may be a great ambassador for Regina.

The Riders receiver, who signed a one-year contract earlier this month to stay with the football team, says his love for Regina is a big reason for him staying as it is the only football home he has known since turning professional.

Evans made the statement while talking to reporters about the contract extension Tuesday.  He added that a Tweet he sent earlier this year when he responded to some racist comments was something he wishes he had never done.

“It was just built up frustration and I reacted too quickly. I painted the entire city and province with a broad brush and that’s not fair because most people there that I’ve met have been great.” Evans said. “I love Regina and I love the people so I want to apologize for what I said. If I offended anybody, I’m sorry. It was just an honest mistake.”

Evans is expected to put up similar or better numbers in 2021 than he did in 2019 when he became one of the CFL’s top receivers.   He says it is tough to have a season like that and then have to take a pay cut, but he understands why it is being done and says at the end of the day, he is playing a game he loves which many no longer do.
