CP Rail sets new grain export record in 2020

CP Rail set a record grain movement of 31.3 million tons in calendar year 2020.

The president of APAS, Todd Lewis, says both railways have seen booming grain exports this past year.

He calls it good news and says it points to the demand for prairie grain.

Meanwhile, the Canadian Transportation Agency has ruled the two railways exceeded their maximum grain revenue entitlement for the last crop year.

CP Rail has to pay 2.27 million dollars and CN 3.3 million dollars to the Western Grains Research Foundation for the over charge, which includes a 5 percent penalty.

CP Rail had grain revenue of 999 million dollars in the past crop year while CN received 933 million dollars.

Lewis says the grain revenue cap is a complicated formula and the railways want to max out their grain revenue.

He is pleased the over charge comes back to the Western Grains Research Foundation.
